Not only are they gifted, but they are a far cry from many of the stereotypes that are quick to surface at the mention of the word “psychic.” These are people who have worked in everything from real estate to corporate sales – all while hosting an extraordinary gift.
According to Tristan Rimbaud, another local psychic, those living as psychics must get used to the fact that there is no end to the curiosity about their gift.
“If you said, ‘I’m a lawyer,’ that’s the end of the conversation,” said Rimbaud. “People are open about it; they just don’t understand what it is. Most people find it interesting, especially the younger generations.”
Rimbaud, who describes himself as a “clairsentient clairvoyant psychic medium” owns and runs New Life Old Soul, a psychic services company. He has dedicated the past 14 years of his life – one that involves, yes, mundane things like grocery shopping – to helping others in their spiritual paths through his abilities.
“It’s very much like connecting bridges,” said Rimbaud. “My job, when I tune in, is to just completely get out of the way and just let spirits speak through me as a channel.”
With clients who run the gamut from firmly established mystics to wary skeptics, Louisville’s professional psychics have encountered all walks of life, dealing with a multitude of people who, despite outward differences, have more in common than meets the eye.
“Everyone, no matter their situation, has problems they need help with,” said Patterson.
Lady LaKira, a practicing psychic for over 15 years and the owner of a New Age shop on Bardstown Road called Moon Struck, agrees with Patterson.
“It’s about human emotion,” said LaKira. “Everybody has their own path.”
It’s no secret that we live in a world that roasts just about every ideology on a spit of skepticism. Those who dare to venture into the shadowy realm of spirits have been lambasted (or, you know, burned at the stake) for centuries. How does something as controversial as psychic divination survive in a society of naysayers? Do today’s mediums still feel the need to operate in shadow? In Louisville, they usually don’t. Most feel free to be themselves.
“I don’t hide who I am because I don’t have to,” said LaKira. “I came out of the broom closet and I’ve been out ever since.”
“I don’t try to hide what I do,” said Rimbaud. “I’m not ashamed of it in any respect.”
Critics of the practice do exist – sometimes with both loud and downright cruel voices. Most naysayers tend to lump those with psychic abilities into the same territory as evil spirits and devil-worship. Thick skins are often necessary for those modern seers, as misconceptions abound in the public eye. But the misnomer of evil – what Rimbaud calls “the darkness factor” – couldn’t be farther from the mark.
“We should never be doing anything that is harmful,” said Patterson.
“I see my role as a person who brings hope,” said LaKira. “No matter how bad things are today, it doesn’t mean it’s going to be that way forever.”
So does our contemporary society of deductive reasoning really benefit from the services of the psychically gifted? What role could the metaphysical play in a culture so obsessed with the tangible? To those who possess the psychic ability, the relevancy could not be clearer.
“I feel like going to a psychic is very much like sitting down with a friend,” said Rimbaud. “Many of us don’t have the friendships now that we need to be able to communicate.”
With so many of us laboring in isolating jobs and living complicated lives, today’s psychic is offering more than just a good fortune. The modern circle of the metaphysical community is geared toward providing insight to the lost, much like a therapist.
“I feel like psychic services fit as another holistic option for talking about…what’s going on in your life,” said Rimbaud. “It’s a process. I just feel that I’m sort of one ring in the works.”
While the search for clarity may be never-ending, and suffering may be a given, the message of Louisville’s psychic community is definitely both positive and unanimous: hope for tomorrow. They seek to help humanity in its quest for understanding, to reach out – spiritually and viscerally – to one another, and to make a positive change.
“It’s really a blessing,” said LaKira. “It’s really a wonderful thing to be able to know that you just had a little bit of a part in helping them along their path.”
So are psychics “legit”? The jury may always be divided. But whatever your worldview, any message of optimism in a world of so much crazy should always be welcomed.
