The Barons of Green

Amazing Green Planet, opened three years ago by the Baron family, is a one-stop shop for stocking the sustainable home. Upon entering the incense scented store, the neatly organized shelves and nice lighting make it feel more like a gift shop than a supply store, and it is, partly. But upon examination of the inventory, it becomes clear the store carries the necessities as well as some items, like Peruvian finger puppets, just for fun. The conscious consumer can pick up responsible cleaning and food storage supplies, cloth diapers, baby bowls made of recycled plastic, sustainable wood toys, meditation crystals, a counter compost bin, and locally made beauty products all in one swoop.

The shop is located in the charming outdoor mall of Westport Village, surrounded by other specialty retailers and local eateries, such as The Comfy Cow ice cream shop and Heine Brothers’ Coffee. “The people who know about us love us,” said Dustin Baron. “The challenge is letting people know we’re here.” Westport Village is a bit tucked away for people who don’t live in the neighborhood, but it’s just as convenient to reach as the Oxmoor Mall and with ten times the charm.
Dustin and his parents, Randy and Mary, have been experimenting with ways to get the word out about the shop and also reward their loyal customers. It pays to be on the email list, which can be accomplished in store or online, where discount coupons are often sent out. The store also gives back 10% of the purchase price toward the next purchase in a “recycle your dollar” program.

Earlier this fall they organized two outdoor movie screenings where patrons set up chairs on the sidewalk outside the store and were treated to free environmentally themed movies projected on a large screen. They had a great turn out and plan on having three showings in 2012. They have also offered a smattering of classes, such as Cloth Diapering 101 with The Diaper Fairy and a composting workshop with Breaking New Grounds, and plan to do more in the future. “Our partners for classes really have to be the right fit,” said Dustin. “But we really enjoy having them when it works.”
While Dustin does the majority of day-to-day managerial duties, the business is a true family affair. Randy tends to the back office duties, while Mary works out front with the customers. The array of fair trade, organic, environmentally friendly, and just plain good for the soul products are carefully chosen by all members of the Baron family. Randy stocks the more spiritual items, such as the crystals. “I like to keep it in the realm of ‘does this help the environment somehow?’” said Dustin. “I enjoy the reusable stuff, like the Snack Taxis (reusable snack bags) and water bottles.”

The store also carries an array of locally made products from the likes of Black Dog Candles, Peace of the Earth, Earthy Browns, and Mayapple Creations, located in Lexington. They also feature local artists, such as Devyn Baron, Dustin’s sister. “We love to sell local products for a number of reasons,” said Dustin, “but mostly because you have a personal relationship with the artist or craft maker. I like that kind of stuff.”
With merchandise that’s not just good for Louisville, but good for our world, Amazing Green Planet should be added to everyone’s holiday shopping hit list.
