Wherever We Land

Dan Brown Space Adventure – Finale

“Not if you were the last man in all of space, Dan Brown!” I said that to him once not so long ago. I didn’t mean it though, lord knows I didn’t. Convinced he might suffer from a personality disorder, I never knew how to handle him. Our conversations were short and to the point. Clearly, he flew into space to get away from people. But there I was, tagging along. Despite his constant cold shoulder, I realized he was terrified of me. Women made him nervous; I made him nervous. Maybe Dan thought he’d break me.

After a few months of close shaves and no-win situations, I had proven myself capable and he let go his lingering doubts. I’d say he even grew fond of me, flirting occasionally, in his own strange way. A mutual trust had been earned. I’ll confess to an attraction that’s been growing. But any emerging emotions were cut short by what I had just seen on the surface monitor.

I had been running tests on the planet’s water supply when I noticed the awful scene on the planet surface. I saw Dan pull his gun on Roger, but it seemed to fail. Roger revealed a gun of his own, shooting Dan square in the chest. Dan took two steps and then fell forward. Roger stood over him, gloating.

I quickly have Isaac feed their com channel onto the bridge. I hear as Roger explains to Dan that it had to be this way and that one day Suzette will learn to love him. Not if I have anything to say about it, creep.

“Isaac, disable all long-range communications. We can’t let Roger contact Mission Control with falsified intel.”

“STATEMENT: Acknowledged. Long-range communications disabled.”

“QUERY: Might it be wise to move the ship a safe distance from Roger’s location?”

“No, let him board. Then move the ship to Dan’s location. I have a few surprises for Mr. Wilcox. Also, if anything happens to me, you’re to initiate self-destruct protocols. Understand?”

“STATEMENT: Affirmative, Suzette. Be safe.”

I reach for a carbide blade from the weapon locker. Roger swiped the last blaster, so the knife is all I’ve got. I spot him sneaking onto the landing ramp from the monitor. From the looks of it, his gun has been holstered. If he underestimates me, I can take him by surprise. The ship takes off, as I had instructed Isaac6.

“No sense in running, Suzette. I’m already on board. You might as well come out. There’s nowhere to hide that I won’t find you.”

I know better than to be goaded. I tighten my grip on the blade to stay calm, but I’m too angry. Everything was just fine before this psychopath hitched a ride. And now poor Dan.

“He made me do it, Suzette. I didn’t want to, but he forced my hand. He drew on me first. You had to have seen that much.” His voice echoes as he draws closer.

As he rounds the corner, I spring from behind it, jamming the blade into his midsection. Instead of doubling over like I had hoped, he lands a right hook on my jaw, knocking me for a loop. Despite the blow, I maintain my grip on the blade. I give his insides a twist before pulling it free. This time the bastard reels a bit, but not before pulling the gun from the holster. I dart through the corridor, looking for an exit. If I make it to the –

“Arghhhhhh!” I scream, before crashing to the floor. He caught me right in the calf. It hurts like hell, but still I crawl, knife in hand.

“You winged me pretty good back there, but not good enough,” Roger grumbles, hovering nearby.

“I would’ve aimed for your heart if I thought you ever had one.”

He grabs my ankle with his free hand, rolling me onto my back. I try keeping the knife hidden, but he hasn’t forgotten about it. His heel smashes into my hand, sending the blade far from reach.

“Now that you don’t have fangs, I’ll make you an offer,” he sneers, leaning close. “And you can be sure, Suzette, this is a one-time-only deal, no take backs. You and I can coexist peacefully while we await Mission Control’s arrival. Hell, maybe after a while you might even learn to love me. I don’t want to be lonely, do you?”

That expression of his tells me with certainty: I’d rather die right now than let him touch me. So I let him know what I think of his deal by spitting in his face. “Go ahead and kill me then, coward.”

“Fine, bitch – have it your way,” he says, then stands, pointing the gun at my head. I close my eyes.

The blast rings in my ears, only I’m not dead. When my eyes finally open, I see Dan, choking Roger with a headlock. The blaster fires wildly in every direction, so I roll out of the way, searching frantically for the knife. Roger breaks free of Dan’s hold, elbowing him in the stomach and sending him to the ground. Dan looks finished as Roger takes aim.

But Roger never pulls the trigger, as my knife is now firmly embedded in his neck. He turns and mutters something inaudible, then drops dead. I check his pulse to make sure I finished the job.

Dan looks up at me through glazed eyes, trying to speak but failing. I manage to get him to the sickbay with what strength I have left. Isaac patches up my leg and begins working on Dan’s wounds. I stay with him a long while, his hand in mine. I drift off and Isaac wakes me a few hours later, confirming that Dan is in stable condition. There is still work to be done, so I head back to the bridge.

All the probes have reported back with positive data. This planet is fully capable of supporting human life. I sit back in the chair for some time, surveying the scenery from the window. We actually did it. Despite all the hardships and setbacks, we traveled the cosmos and found a second chance for the human race.

When I come to on the bed in sickbay, I still imagine that my hands are around Roger’s throat. It takes Suzette a few minutes to calm my nerves.

“So he’s done then?”

“Dead as a doornail, just like I thought you were.”

“You should be so lucky. I’m going to be pestering you for a while longer, thanks to Isaac.”

“Good. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Besides, I’d get lonely on this big rock without some company,” she says, grinning.

“Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” I ask, hopefully. “Did we pick a winner?”

Her grin broadens to a full-blown smile and I’m relieved. “It’s perfect, Dan. All the comforts of Mother Earth.”

“What did J.W. say? Are they sending the fleet to us or to Larry’s location?”

“Both,” she says, surprisingly. “J.W said they wanted to explore both options – half the fleet here, the other half there. They’ll be here within two years.”

“That’s – that’s great, Suzette. What do we do until then?”

“We make a home.”
